Turtle Island Gallery Charles E. Joseph Sr.

Charles grew up in Alert Bay, B.C. and was raised in the traditional ways of his people by his great grandparents. When he was six,the missionaries came for him and placed him a residential school. At the time he spoke no English and had rarely seen white men before. He still speaks his language and tells of the stories and knowledge passed down from his great grandparents. He is very active in the Big House, dancing and carving come very naturally to him, and he believes he must pass this on to the next generation.
Charles love of art took root when he a young boy, and it has flourished into a fulltime career. He has apprenticed with Bill Reid, Simon Dick, Beau Dick and Wayne Alfred to name but a few.He lives on Vancouver Island and now carves in the traditional Turner Island style and much of his work is the old Kwakwaka'wakw style he learned from his great grandfather.
